Masterclass with Dr Graham Clarke
Solo singing was mostly sounded within the conversational pitch range and any extension was only ever by way of decorative flourish. Such decoration of a melody kept the ear interested but the result wasn’t much different from that of an instrument playing the notes. The significant development in the long tradition of singing was the ability to sound an emotional story through song. The Italian art of bel canto was a natural choice for the theatre. Being big and loud all the time isn’t what composers wrote nor wanted for this tradition, yet, that became what one now expects from an opera performance. Be moved by the reinstated connection to the human condition that the well-known arias reveal.
